Jamel Akib British, b. 1965

Born inLeigh-on-sea, Essex in 1965 to English and Malaysian parents, Jamel moved to North Borneo at the age of five. At thirteen he returned to England to pursue his education and in 1989 he successfully gained a BA Honours Degree in Illustration.

His work is striking in its sense of movement; there is energy and vigour as he captures a bird mid flight or a dancer pirouetting. The initial sketched marks are often visible in the final painting and convey not only the vitality and potential of the subject but also the artist’s hand at work.

Jamel began his career working for the London Observer newspaper while still a student at art school. During a career of many highs Jamel has had the pleasure of illustrating the covers for no less than three Booker Prize finalists, his clients are many and include National Geographic, Oxford University Press and The Independent.

Jamel lives in Salisbury, England with his wife and two boys.
